The John Lewis Voting Rights Act

The John Lewis Voting Rights Act is the most important legislation of the Biden/Harris administration.

Now that the “supreme” court has ruled that States can limit access to voting and dark money that funds campaigns is okay, the voting act is needed more than ever.

The court even had the white supremacy gall to say that if one doesn’t work or have wealth then we should expect different voting results/access. That should be shocking but with a court full of wealthy mostly white men it really comes as no surprise.

The ruling also provided more ammunition to those who rightly call for the death of the racist filibuster- the same one (republicans-dems such as Manchin and Sinema (and others) oppose.

The far left Sanders and Jill Stein voters who helped Trump get elected should be happy because they got exactly what they wanted: limited and restricted voting access for Black voters. The voters who on two occasions helped destroy the Russian-fueled candidacy of Bernard Sanders.

Passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act is the most important law the can and should be passed this year. It is the vanguard that will go the furthest in saving America from what nationalism and another attempted overthrown of the democratically elected government.

The John Lewis Voting Act is needed now more than ever because we have seen what happens when Black and Indigenous voters help flip six states, dominate Georgia, and send the historic combination of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the Presidency and Vice Presidency.

What happens is white nationalists stage an armed insurrection attempting to overthrow the government, assassinate the Vice President and Speaker of the House, and murder, hang, decapitate other elected officials – especially women and Black officials.

Despite the help and or indifference of various law enforcement agencies and the World’s most powerful military ™ the traitors took over the seat of power at the Capitol and paraded confederate and trump flags, chased officials, wiped shit on the walls, and stole everything not bolted to the floor.

Once the insurrection failed white nationalists resorted to their tried and true method of maintaining the illusion that they are in charge: gerrymandering and implementing targeted voting restrictions that prevent early voting, Sunday voting, college voting, absentee voting, and any and all voting that Black people are most likely to use.

Proving once again that the greatest democracy in history remains shackled like the people it enslaved for centuries, unable to escape because its captures – the GQP – refuse to grant it emancipation.

If the Constitution was truly and finally unleashed, everyone would have equal access to vote and voting would be made easier, faster, and more universal.

Alas, we are not living in a democracy that *wants its non-white citizens to vote. Despite Supreme Court Justice John Roberts insistence to “Don’t worry, be happy” – otherwise known as the Supreme Court striking down as unconstitutional the historic 1965 Voting Rights Act, we can see the long lines, the reduced voting locations in Black areas, and the acts of voter intimidation but armed white men just like we saw in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Act, championed by President Joe Biden during his campaign – “It’s one of the first things I’ll do as president if elected.” He said at a campaign stop in July. Joe Biden was friends with John Lewis and he is aware that John Lewis shed blood marching for voting rights during the 1960’s, leading to Bloody Sunday in Selma.

Vice President Kamala Harris, also a friend of John Lewis and a daughter of Civil Rights activist parents, also understand the importance of passing the act that is needed even more than in the 1960’s as the country pushes back against the rising tide of fascism and the destruction of the “Great American experiment.”

Now is the time to keep the single most important campaign promise the President and Vice President made.

Now is the time to end the filibuster and to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act because as President Joe Biden said: Our Democracy depends on it.

DEMOCRATS ARE WINNING AND FEELING FRUSTRATED

Managers in corporate America tell employees that “Even though we achieved our goals last month/quarter/year, we need to do better.” Sport coaches, fresh off a win, will tell their players “We can’t let up, we made some mistakes but we got the win. We have a lot to work on before the next game.” And couples…

Georgia Forewoman’s Big Mouth

Sometimes we get in arguments over good topics that are seen from different perspectives. Often the “legal” and constitutional views conflict with the lived experiences of especially but not exclusively Black people. The jury forewoman from Georgia, Emily Kohrs, is the latest to cause friends and allies to argue from different perspectives. Legal folk, journalists, scholars and…

The Emancipation of the Republican Party

The Grand Old Party has been renewed and refreshed for the new century. No longer shackled by the weight of being called “The Party of Lincoln,” or faced with recruiting candidates with ethics, vision for improving America, or championing the rule of law or, hell, the constitution, the new GOP are free to be their…
